The 1978-79 Homewood Patriot Marching Band

30th Anniversary of the first trip to Macy's

I was reminded by George's comment in his profile, how much fun we had at the home football games. Our "stadium" was off of West Oxmoor, right? Is it still there? To this day whenever I see a VW Beetle (especially one with a roof rack), I fondly remember my Dad being stuck driving me and band friends to the games on Friday nights. What was especially funny was the larger instruments (especially the sousaphone and trombone) strapped to the roof rack, with us guys all squeezed into that tiny car. We must have been quite a sight to see driving down the road...

Very fond memories there. I know I was a carpooler from the start. Yes; Waldrop Stadium is still there and still used by the football pgm. Sadly, I only know that because I googled it. See:

I remember your Dad and the VW Beetle. I also remember piling in me and Keith's little red Fiat, Kenny's yellow mustang, the Shaffer's cars, whatever it took to get to practices and games. Good times.

Off topic, but hey, I started this topic, I feel I have the right... I remember that Fiat. I still tell folks the story of us frequently having to push-start it on winter mornings. And Keith driving it down Columbiana when his rear wheel passed him!!! Usually I recall these events whenever I hear a song from Billy Joel's The Stranger album, an 8-track (!) of which I think we must have worn out one year by repeated listening on the way to school. And speaking of the Shaffers, I vaguely recall hearing that Charlie had passed away - I hope I'm wrong. Can anyone verify it?

The fun ones to watch move were the drums on the back of Don Bennett's truck! Remember how it didn't have anything to keep them from rolling off, so he couldn't go over the hill at the school to go around to the loading dock? When I see a VW Beetle, I am reminded of the time(s) one was parked in the way of our practicing in the parking lot at the school and somebody deciding to move it by bouncing it up and down until they were able to bounce it out of the way. (That would have been the time BooBoo wasn't steering :-) )

hey - the best VW beetle story was Chris Lotts Dad's beetle with the Susaphones on the top luggage rack - what a sight ! And - Chris - we always had to prime that Fiat before we pushed it and hit the engine with a hammer. Then there was the New Yorker with no back glass !

Charlie's alive and kicking and living in Tennessee. I hope he will join in here soon. I'm trying to convince Steve Langston to get him involved.

Mom used to pick us up at school and take us to Shades Cahaba in Dad's old New Yorker (ours had the back-glass in it). On at least one occasion, we ended up with Chris Lott and Charlie Shaffer in the back seat - it is amazing how many souzaphones/drums you could fit into that thing. The bells for the souzaphones were in the trunk, but the body from one was in the car - Chris decided to have his own Oompah band while Mom was driving, with him blowing on the souzaphone and beating the drum in the back seat.

Whew, I'm so glad to hear that. Hope he joins us.

Stadium is still there and has been expanded considerably. Paved parking lot, brick walkways, ticket booth, large concessions stands, locker rooms and new visitor bleachers going in as we speak. My daughter is in the band (headed for the Rose Bowl this year). Anyone with spare time can help band parents clean the concession stands this Saturday, y'know, for old times sake.
