Gerald Kimes

He left to teach coal miners or some such.
Do I have to come up with the next question if my answer is right?

Hey, this isn't fair. You guys have your yearbooks handy....

Which band member was dabbling in the travel agent business while still in High School?

You are correct.

More specifically, Kimes' new job had to do with safety in coal mines. Bonus question - how did Mr. Kimes' thermos bottle get broken, and can you name one of the individuals responsible?

FYI Chris, I don't own a Junior High yearbook. I think the entrepreneur you refer to was Butch Lurwig. He was always into something. I hope that Martha (Forbes) Mayes can find Barbara Hamilton, who can find Cheryl, who can contact her Brother and get them all involved.

Leslie, I don't know the thermos story.

Who can name the fellow who substituted (part time) as band director after Kimes left? I think he later became HJHS principal.

Or as we used to call him, Lurch Butwig. But that wouldn't be nice.

Ahhh, I can see his face, and I almost answered his name to the first question. On the tip of my tongue...

The name was Donald Cornutt. He was a band director at Samford. His wife later taught in the Homewood School System.

The thermos story. Ok...for some reason a couple of guys thought it would be really fun to play touch-football in the bandroom (this was middle-school - one of them was a Haden - the one that was a little older than Bruce) and somebody fumbled. I think they tried to sneak it back, but Kimes being smart enough to know a broken thermos from a non-broken one, figured out somebody had messed with it.

You guys have great memories! :-)

Next Question --
How long (in MILES, Chris!) :-) was the Mardi Gras parade (1978) that led to the Macy's invite? And, (extra credit) How many band, color gaurd, and SSG's dropped out during the parade?

Knowing that the answer to the substitute band-director question was correct (in addition to having been there, I knew his family from when I kept his grandkids at the daycare I used to work at) here is a new one, and more related to the NYC trip in 1978

The name "Seaman's Church Institute" - what happened there?

Ah, these questions are way over my head. Either you guys are taking some kind of memory enhancement vitamin regimen, or I have an especially dull memory (more likely). To balance things out, here's an easy question, hopefully even dimwits can answer:

What hazard did us Sousaphone players bravely endure during the entire TBD (see previous question) miles of the Maris Gras parade?

The dudes and dudettes throwing beads through the bell? We used the clarinets as a kinda ring toss game in that way, too!
