Watching all the Olympics these days, I remember we played the Olympic theme song one year, although I don't remember any details. Surely it was part of our show or a parade... help me remember...

I remember that too, but I'm thinking it was for a football game. All I really remember was that the clarinet part consisted of only two notes (tones) played over and over.

30 Points, Randy - it was the Bridgemen from Bayonne. Anybody know if they are still in business? The last few times I saw a DCI championship on PBS, I didn't see them. And "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends" was their message at the beginning of the show.

Okay, curiosity got the best of me and I had to go look it up. It was Bayonne, NJ, home of boxer Chuck "The Bayonne Bleeder" Wepner. And it looks like those kooky kids are still as nutty as ever.

We played the opening part of the Olympics themesong at every game when the team entered the field. (And everybody would point at the team while we played.) We pretty much just knew it as "Fanfare" or "Bugler's" (remember, Mr Morrow would hold up fingers to indicate whether we were playing the fanfare or Hoorah for Homewood). The title of the song is Bugler's Dream.

I guess that's why it wasn't called "Clarinetist's Dream". I can almost hum the bass part, too, and we may have had 4 or even 5 notes!

It wasn't really "Piccolo Player's Dream" either. I think we had rests for the first half, and then came in for the second. (That's how I know about the pointing thing - it gave us something to do while we waited for our part.) The best picc part we ever had was the year we had to be the Auburn band for the jv game-that version of War Eagle was harder than The Stars And Stripes forever!

Since nobody else has taken the ball to ask a new question, I will ask one. What was the "Off The Line" song for 1978 football season (hint - this was while we were preparing for the Macy's trip)?

Well I was going to guess barfield on the JH Band Leader. Cornutt was Principal by the time I got there. I saw a real estate sign the other day with Don Cornutt on it as the agent. I ended up witha pillow case full of beads and dubloons in my Mardi Gras parade, and the best part, 7 full beers! Sousaphones Rock!

I'm not touching the "Institute" question

Was it "Superman" that year?

Actually I was thinking Manhattan Skyline, but Superman is possible - I'm always fuzzy on Superman because that was what we played coming off the line when I was in the Auburn band 1979-1980.

Well, it has been awhile since we had a question, so here is one. What piece that we played caused us to probably kill more bass-drum heads than anything else we tried? (Hint - it wasn't during marching season.)

Well, would that have been Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture?
