That would be the one. Fred always liked that I knew that one - he was Field Artillery in the Army, and that is one of the few pieces he might have actually had a part in. Ask a question, Chris!

Well, it has been awhile since we had a question, so here is one. What piece that we played caused us to probably kill more bass-drum heads than anything else we tried? (Hint - it wasn't during marching season.)

Well, would that have been Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture?

Ok, I heard a Barry Manilow song this morning on the radio.... which song of his did we play? I remember playing it at basketball games (therefore it might had been just the stage band and not the whole band).

Speaking of spinoff groups like the stage band, what was the name of the small Dixieland Band a few of us played in? I know for sure Charlie Shaffer was the drummer. I remember John Simpson played trombone, and Lurch Butwig Butch Lurwig was piano. This isn't a test question, because I don't know the answer myself...

The guess for stage band would have been Bandstand Boogie, but WE played Copacabana...(I wasn't in stage band and didn't do basketball - they may have played something but I wouldn't know which one)

Ah, Copacabana - I *knew* there was another of his songs we played, I just couldn't remember. Right, I was thinking of American Bandstand. I guess it was stage band at the basketball games.

One of the bands may have played Daybreak, too - I seem to remember that one from somewhere. When you said Barry Manilow, I figured it was probably one of those homecoming things (remember - SWAT wasn't the only tv themesong we played - there was also that great contribution to music, the Laverne and Shirley theme). Ok, how many movie soundtracks did we play from? I don't honestly know the answer at the moment, but the first one I remember was excerpts from Carousel.

A few years ago, for reasons unknown, I went through a phase of listening to old songs from folks like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Stan Getz, etc. I remember digging up the song we played our freshman year in Marching Band. It was by Steve Allen. What was the title of that song?

It was Something Big. ("This could be the start of something big...")

And what Glenn Miller tune did we play (which had some wrong notes written in the flute part, but since that was one of my dad's favorites, we noticed the dischord).

Hey Chris,

For some reason when I read your question about the dixieland ensemble the name "South of Dixie" popped into my head. Could that be it? You left off Robert Spence and Mary Monk.

It could be. I can't judge this one, because I don't know. You might find a photo of us in the Annual, but I doubt the group's name would be displayed. Thanks for completing the roster, I couldn't remember everyone.

Ok, not exactly question, but a recollection. I won't name any accomplices (because I really can't rememer - although I have a few guesses). But I will confess. One year during concert season, prior to one of our concerts, I helped play a practical joke on Morrow. We snuck onstage after the final rehersal, and slipped a nude photo from Playboy in the middle of one of the scores. There were several of us watching in rapt attention during the concert that night. I remember Morrow handled it very professionally, and barely cracked a smile. I wonder if he suspected who did it? I don't remember whether he ever mentioned the incident, or just ignored it (more likely).

The Mardi Gras parade was 7 miles long and no one dropped out. On the other hand, the band that beat us (Bull Cookies) had to have several of its members carried off on stretchers.
