The 1978-79 Homewood Patriot Marching Band

30th Anniversary of the first trip to Macy's

Leslie Warren Morris

Strangest Band Moment or Most Unusual Nickname

This one just sounded like it might be interesting. Maybe somebody else has one of those "do you remember when" thoughts to put out here. (And maybe there are some fun things that happened that some of us weren't aware of.) So here goes... At the hotel in NYC, our Ms. Rives injured her leg while attending a party in Steve Langston's hotel room (along with pretty much everybody who didn't go see The Wiz). Palmer wouldn't allow her to walk or even hop - guess he was afraid of a blood-clot or something. In an effort to be the good Samaritan, I carried her from the hotel room to the bus, and thus ended up with the nickname "Amazon."

I roomed with Steve on that trip, Was that the night someone pulled the curtains out of the plaster wall?

Could be. All I know for sure is that Robyn flopped down on a bed, got flipped off the bed and banged the side of her calf on the windowsill. (That's the story they told me, anyway.) Scott Cullen (BooBoo) said:

Here is another fun one - don't remember which trip it was, but we were riding at night and it was a long drive - the driver on our bus evidently got bored, because that was the first time I'd ever seen a bus driver driving with his left foot propped on top of the dashboard (under the steering wheel) and steering with his elbows. Either that, or we serenaded him with The Bus Driver Song once too often.

To this day, I have never recovered from "Irmo"

Somewhere in my slides, I have a picture of Irmo wearing his hat with pigeons standing all over it. This was probably sometime after they all got the kazoos shaped like tiny little trombones (seems like they called them trombeens) and serenaded most of the French Quarter.

He was quite enthusiastic, as I recall...

I found a couple of New Orleans pics ... Keith Collin's being eaten by hundreds of pigeons and one of our host Scott, diving through the air into a bed, caught by flash in the pitch black

This might not count, but when I went to NY, we got to go shop at Macys and Bloomingdales. At one of those stores a small group of us ran into Jim Nabors shopping. When he found out we were from Homewood, he stayed and talked to us for about an hour. We had to go all the way to NY to meet a celebrity from AL.

LOL at running into Gomer Pyle on a band trip. There were rumors that some rock-type bands were staying in our hotel (Eagles or somebody) - we looked, but never found them.

How about Sonya Bowman running around all the time doing her "Bing bing bing - Kmart Bluelight Special!" to which somebody (was it you, Keith?) announced "Sonya Bowmans - two for a dollar!"

I remember during Jennifer Haley's (Hitler) color guard captain rein, captains were given dictator nicknames since we seemed to do nothing but yell and boss all the time so keeping in with the traditions, I became "Moose" . It is with fond, heartfelt memories that I love that nickname, would never have traded it for the world.
