The 1978-79 Homewood Patriot Marching Band

30th Anniversary of the first trip to Macy's

I looked in my old yearbook and a mailing list from the Class of '80 20th reunion fell out. Those addresses are 8 years old but I might send out a note card to the band members on that list with a invitation and a link. Any other ideas on how we can reach folks and encourage their participation? Do you know any siblings or extended family members? Reach out and touch someone. Let's hear your ideas.

Where are the new members? Where are the CURRENT members???

I've been waiting on my Mom to dig up the video tape of our parade broadcast. She promises it is there, but still elusive. She did find a Homewook Band Boosters button! She's been doing a thorough house cleaning in preparation for moving back to Alabama for retirement in the next year or so. I promise to post the video as soon as it's located.

If I can only get my son to take 1 hour to transfer our LP to MP3 file, I'll post it too.

I posted the website on the bulletin board at Lags, and even got some response from people eating. Perhaps I can make a flyer with tear offs. If you can send me a list of names, I can contact the people who do our (84) reunion. A lot of them have older siblings that were in the band. And maybe they can tell us what nursing home they are in.

OK I just noticed that there was already a list of band members on the site. I sent it to gary Mullins who should be able to get a few email addresses at least. Looking over the names, there are a few I might be able to track down.

Thanks. That's a good idea. I found some other siblings and hope some connections can be made as well.

Some of my son's friends claim their dad, Murray, played flute in the band, and was the first class to go to the new high school. That would be CO79 right? Anyway I gave them a sticky note with the site on it to give him. They had been walking inthe creek and were wet, so I dont know if the sticky note was sticky enough.I cant remember the last name. I guess I need to lay off the old people jokes since I have a bad case of CRS myself. Have I posted this already?

As I recall, the first class to graduate was the class of 76. And I can't remember if their claim to fame was first ever to graduate, or first to graduate with a full four years at the school. I'm thinking the latter. For some reason I remember our first trumpet player my freshman year was in that class of 76. Man, I am so confused... he was a Spence, right? But wasn't there another Spence in our class (79)? One (or both, if they were brothers) was the son of our Math/Algebra teacher in 8th grade at Jr. High. Spence? Spencer? I need some memory enhancing vitamins....

Could Murray have been a Hayden? Bruce - you could answer this one.

First trumpet when we were freshmen was Tommy Hart - his mom may have been the algebra teacher at the middle school. The school opened after Christmas break in 1972, so class of '76 should have been the first class to graduate having spent their entire high school career at HHS. I don't remember a Spence other than Robert, and he was in our class. I know Robert had older brothers, but I don't think they were in band.

Thanks Leslie. I said I was confused. You have straightened out my memory. If I only had access to my yearbook, all would be clear, and I would come across as having a perfect memory! It was indeed Tommy Hart and Mrs. Hart that I was remembering. But I kept coming up with Robert Spence's name. Thanks for lifting the fog...

Actually, I don't have my yearbooks handy - I remember Tommy Hart because I went through my entire freshman year with uniform pants that hit about 2 inches above the ankle - I was hoping with Tommy being so tall maybe the next year I could get his hand-me-down uniform pants so my cuffs might finally reach the tops of my shoes! Freshman year was also the year when we played Brian's Song, having Mike Wald come out in his football uniform for the solo. One of my daughters is married to Mike's brother Maury's nephew, and the other is dating one of Robert's nephews.

Why is Leslie's photo so tiny??? Everyone else's photo fills up the square, but her's only fills one small corner...

Because I don't often let anybody take pictures of me, and the only one I had where you could see my face was from Christie's wedding in 2005. Besides, I'm campaigning to be put on a postage stamp. (Maybe I could get a discount on them.)
